What to bring to the hospital before transplant surgery

You will need to bring some clothes and other items from home to be comfortable during your stay at the hospital. Here is a list of things to think about to get you started. You may think of other things you would like to bring. You can also download the list of what to bring and what to leave at home and save it as a reminder.

What to bring to the hospital

Personal items

  • Tooth brush, toothpaste, any special cleaning tools if you have braces or a retainer.
  • Hairbrush or comb, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel.
  • Anything you use regularly such as glasses or contact lenses, hearing aids or crutches.

Clothes

  • Enough loose, comfortable clothing for day and night (plan for 10-14 days).
  • Slippers or other indoor shoes.

Bedding

  • A favourite blanket, if you like.

Contact information

  • Phone numbers of any friends or relatives you will want to call.

Medical details

  • Your OHIP card
  • The binder with all the information about your transplant – you will also use it to keep all your important medical information and test results.
  • A list of your current medicines.
  • If you are coming from far away, a thermometer, blood pressure cuff and stethoscope (if possible) – you will need these once you are discharged and staying close to the hospital.

School stuff

  • School books or any homework.

Things to help pass the time

  • Books, magazines, playing cards, board games.
  • Cell phone, laptop, tablet*.

*If you choose to bring these, remember that you cannot store them in a safe place in the hospital. The hospital will not be responsible if they are lost or stolen.

What to leave at home

  • Latex balloons.
  • Nuts, or food that contains nuts.
  • Fresh flowers or plants.
  • Jewellery or piercings.
  • Make-up and nail polish (remove any before coming to hospital).
