What are types of cancer that young people get?
The types of cancer that young people get are often different from the types of cancer in older people. For instance, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and breast cancer are more common in older people, but they are not very common in young people.
The types of cancer that are more common in young people include:
- Brain tumours
- Leukemia – cancer of the blood
- Lymphoma – cancer of the lymphatic system (part of the immune system)
- Bone tumours
- Soft tissue tumours (sarcoma) – in the muscles or bones
- Melanoma – skin cancer
- Germ cell tumours – from the body’s gonads (testes and ovaries)
- Thyroid cancer – in the thyroid gland
