What is a dietitian?
A dietitian is an expert in food and nutrition. Dietitians help people stay healthy by giving expert advice about food choices. A dietitian can talk to you about any special diet requirements you might have during cancer treatment.
What can a dietitian do for me?
During treatment, you might develop new and special diet requirements. Your appetite might change; you may be more or less hungry than before; you may feel nauseous; or you may have mouth pain that can make eating difficult. You might even notice changes in how your body digests food or notice that food tastes different. These changes can make eating difficult.
A dietitian can help if you are experiencing any of these challenges. They can help you come up with a plan to make sure that you get the nutrition you need to keep your body strong, even if you are experiencing some problems with food.
Dietitians know many creative ways to help people with cancer get the energy they need. If you think you would benefit from seeing a dietitian, ask your medical team to refer you to one.
